The Quality of Things
Looking at Still Life and Figures with Objects

A still life is seen as a work of art depicting mostly
inanimate subject matter but they are more than
bowls of fruit or vases of flowers. Often containing
allegorical symbolism the artist is given more
freedom in the arrangement and selection of
objects within a composition. Some will include
figures where the objects surrounding them add to
the narrative. Some compositions have a purely
design and aesthetic content. Examples of works by
current artists and from art collections invite you
to look a little closer.
