The Quality of Things
Looking at Still Life and Figures with Objects

A still life is seen as a work of art depicting mostly
inanimate subject matter but they are more than
bowls of fruit or vases of flowers. Often containing
allegorical symbolism the artist is given more
freedom in the arrangement and selection of
objects within a composition. Some will include
figures where the objects surrounding them add to
the narrative. Some compositions have a purely
design and aesthetic content. Examples of works by
current artists and from art collections invite you
to look a little closer.

Jessica Cooper

The highlight of this month’s ‘The Surfer’s Path’ for me was the art section focus on Jessica Cooper. If you check it out you’ll find a series of seriously simple depictions of surfers with their boards. Jessica strips down the surfer to the most elemental form which gives it a real sense of power. Here is what she says about her work:

I make paintings about particular memories and experiences, which I record in sketchbooks. I try to isolate images in their painted world so that they stand as signifiers, like short poems, to convey those overwhelming moments of understanding and feeling that life can occasionally dish up. I edit out the extraneous so that the images stand alone, becoming metaphors for time and place and our emotional continuity.

Out of sorts...

I posted something earlier then an hour later took it away (and I never do that!) so I am formless today, with nothing all that worthwhile to say. I keep typing then deleting...I am out of sorts. So just these wonderful blooms instead of words. And speaking of pictures; here is fate for you. I love a particular painter called Jessica Cooper and we kinda follow her work. We have been lucky enough to buy two of her pieces. So there was this one painting that my husband always loved and we saw years ago but that we never really pursued. Recently just ad-hoc, I contacted the gallery in question to see if the painting was still available. Turns out it had gone into storage; suggesting that no one wanted it. The combination of tracking it down long after we first saw it, and that it was alone in storage made us want it even more. Now some would say this painting is not a good investment as no one else wanted it, but for me, it's as good as it gets as it means something. It has a story. And if nothing else, shouldn't something like art - that you save up for and buy and treasure and pass down generations in your family - have meaning? It's being delivered today :-)
